This past summer I got to visit a friend’s vineyard and learn all about wine and the plants and what it takes to grow them. It inspired me to say the least and I decided to make the Nine of Pentacles a Green Man (or a Green Woman in this case). This is a card about being self-sufficient, enjoying the luxury of what you have and how hard you have worked for it, so this Green Woman is basking in her own growth, her lush leaves and growing grapes.
THE CARD’S MESSAGE BY TRISH SULLIVAN
Satisfied, even proud, a Green Woman looks out on the fruits of her labors. She has tended the vines, and now the harvest is more than even she ever expected. A falcon perches at her head, content and controlled, a symbol of her intellectual power. There’s always more you could be doing, but that doesn’t mean you should. You need downtime, to treat yourself, to remind yourself of the reasons WHY you work so hard. So stop, and relax, take the time to celebrate your achievements, to enjoy the success and independence that you’ve earned, secure in the knowledge that as long as you continue to work hard, you will continue to be able to treat yourself on occasion.
MYTHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION: GREEN MAN (WOMAN)
Dating back as far as ancient Roman architecture, there are many depictions of the Green Man in relation to Dionysus the leaf-crowned lord of the wilderness. These leaf-faced figures are thought to represent nature spirits and deities from a range of mythologies, including the folklore figures celebrated on May Day in Europe, the Celtic nature god Cernuous, and Pan in Greek mythology. Th e fruitfulness of this figure, with leaves literally covering his (or in this case her) face made us feel that she was an ideal image for this card.
Aries March 21 to April 20
Dear Aries, This week, you will have an electrifying experience that will change your life in a way that it will not be the same again. It is the time for destruction and creation. These forces are a part of the raw divine nature emulated through Goddess Kali. Please understand that change is the only constant in life. Trying to prevent it is like trying to row upstream without a paddle. The lessons that you shall learn through these changing circumstances will be invaluable. It is a good time in the spiritual domain, as you shall be able to strip away the physical realm and connect with your spiritual self.

What you have gone through was not without purpose. The great positive power within you can be used to learn from your pain and draw wisdom from difficult situations.

Cancer June 22 to July 23
Dear Cancerian, This week you might come across a sharp and logical person who will help you with his keen insight. Rather, approach things logically, dispassionately, and with forceful aim and let the chips fall where they may. At times, this is precisely what is needed and will yield the results you want. The cards also indicate a time when you shall have a thirst for knowledge. Students will do well this week.

Dear Leo, This week your life seems to be out of balance, perhaps due to someone else’s selfish nature. Sometimes people assume a leadership role in your life without the required qualifications; they expect others to follow them when they haven’t earned any respect. Please break away from this person. Those who are in a relationship might feel partner has become possessive and dominating, taking away your individual freedom. This puts a tremendous strain on the relationship, so it is time to take action and build the relationship that you desire. It is also time to get rid of old habits, addictions, or anger issues.

Sagittarius November 23 to December 21
Dear Sagittarius, This week you need to take a stand and defend what you believe in. The world is full of strife, people will try and pull you down but you need to face everyone with faith and courage. Do not buckle under the gusty wind but sway like a bamboo. It doesn’t matter what hardships come your way, the cards show that you shall surely overcome them and be victorious.

Dear Capricorn, This week focuses on love and relationships. Capris who are coupled may feel a lack of harmony. It seems as your partner thinks he or she is better than you or that his or her opinion is more important than yours. A few among you may be in a long distant relationship and it might be difficult to be with each other. There is also a chance that two people can know each other so well that the relationship becomes stale. So, you have a choice you can worry about your own nightmare, or you can confront your terrible dreams, fears and frightening projections. You know your deck so well. You hold it in your hands often, and maybe even slept with it under your pillow. But for some reason, it’s given you a “bad” reading and thrown you for a loop. How could it be wrong? You heard the cards were never wrong.
Tarot is a marvelous, magical tool for intuitive insight. When the cards don’t give us a clear answer, it can be disheartening. What could be the matter?
First, check in with yourself. If you are not in a balanced mental state, the cards may be picking up your energy. This can happen because of a crisis or just because you didn’t slept well the night before.
If you are reading for someone else, and they’re giving you a look and a headshake for every card, be sure to ask them what your interpretation means to them. Together you can figure out how the card fits into the person’s life.
Another thing to consider is that a tarot reading is just a snapshot in time. As soon as you put your cards down and read them, the future can change based on what you learn. Sometimes what you think is a “bad” reading is you learning what you actually want, which may have been unclear before the reading. Tarot readings are not prophecies because we are never static.
Remember tarot readings are a mixture of present and future. If just part of the reading seems off, it could mean that those energies haven’t entered your life yet.
Lastly, and most importantly, consider that the energy of the cards is there… but the story you’re associating with may be wrong. This is easy to fall into if you use a certain deck for a while. For example, in Rider-Waite, the Ten of Swords shows a man stabbed in the back. If you were to read just what is pictured in the card, you’d see a betrayal. However, while each card represents a focused and isolated energy, realize that the energy is faceted. The Ten of Swords, being a 10 card, can simply mean the end of a cycle. Together with the suit of swords, it’s the end of a cycle of great upheaval and change. In this case, the Ten of Swords can actually be a relief.

Is that tarot card following you? Haven’t you seen this reading before?
Chances are, if you get enough tarot readings, you’re going to see repeat cards. There are only 78 cards in the deck, and eventually you’re going to see most of them in a spread.
But what about those cards that keep popping up? Sometimes, a card or set of cards will follow you around from reading to reading, showing up in different aspects of the spread to remind you that there is still work you need to do. This can provide some insight on how you are proceeding and what still needs to be done to achieve your goals.
If a card or group of cards seems to be lurking in the shadows, waiting to pounce on you at every reading, here are a few things to keep in mind.
Is it a common suit of cards?
Sometimes, your spreads will be very heavy in a certain suit for a while. For example, if you are seeing tons of Cups in your readings, you are probably dealing with relationship or emotional issues. If you’re searching for a job or a home, expect to see Pentacles popping up everywhere. All this means is that your primary focus is in this area and that the cards are reflecting where the bulk of your energy is being spent.
Is it a single Minor Arcana card?
For years, a close friend of mine labored under the burden of the Four of Pentacles. No matter what she did, that lovely, nervous woman on the card kept looking back at my friend from behind her closely-guarded treasure trove. We both knew what it meant. My friend had spent so much of her life having things taken from her by friends, family, and strangers that she clung to everything she had for fear of losing it. While this is a good short-term plan, after a while that kind of strategy tends to backfire. Holding on so tightly to what she had was blocking abundance from coming into her life. Until she was able to fully accept, forgive, and release what had been done to her, she continued to hold on to that Four of Pents energy. Once she did the emotional work of forgiveness and release, she stopped seeing the card so frequently. And she started to receive more abundance in her life.
Is it a single Major Arcana card?
If a Major Arcana card is sticking to your readings like glue, you need to stop and really pay attention. These cards tend to be more than daily situation cards; they are connected to Big Life Events that affect your life journey. For instance, if you see The High Priestess over and over and over again, you may be ignoring your instinctive, mystical, psychic self. The High Priestess works closely with the Empress, who holds reign over the stuff of life, the chaotic, powerful energy that permeates the Universe. A person seeing this card repeatedly needs to pull themselves out of the realm of Left Brain and connect once more with the primal energies of life. This could be through meditation, yoga, or any other forms of focused activity.
Getting the same Major Arcana card repeatedly is a message from the cards that you have major work to do on a specific aspect of your life, and until you address this issue you will continue to be blocked from fully moving forward on your path.
It’s all good
Even if a card is hounding you, there’s no need to be afraid. All it means is that there is a message you need to address, and the cards are not going to let up until you do what needs to be done. The card is not a creepy stalker lurking in the shadows. It’s more like your mom, harping on you to clean up your room until you finally get tired of hearing it…and clean up your damned room!
In other words, if a card is following you from reading to reading?
Clean up your room.

It was once seen as the preserve of fairground fortune-tellers spouting platitudes from a booth, and ageing hippies with a fondness for Aleister Crowley and the occult. Now, the art of reading the tarot is back in style, with books, artwork and onstage readings captivating a new generation of fans.
Instagram is full of beautifully shot tarot spreads, with cards showing the High Priestess or the Wheel of Fortune very much to the fore, while tarot-card readers are the heroines of crime novels such as Ruth Ware’sThe Death of Mrs Westaway and EV Harte’s Dolly Greeneseries, and enthusiasts can get decks featuring everything from Alice in Wonderland to Game of Thrones.
Brooklyn artists Kahn & Selesnick crowdfunded their recent project, the Carnival at the End of the World tarot deck, through Kickstarter, while Rough Trade Books has just published the Autonomic Tarot, an experimental 30-card linocut tarot deck collaboration between writer David Keenan and artist Sophy Hollington.
Young Adult author Maggie Stiefvater has created her own tarot deck, the Raven’s Prophecy Tarot, which references her bestselling Raven Cycle series. And Litwitchure, created by best friends Fiona Lensvelt and Jennifer Cownie – billed as a Literary Tarot Cabaret and Consultancy – was a hit at the recent Port Eliot festival, with appearances due at other festivals, and even a podcast planned.
“Jen and I had been interested in tarot since we were teenagers wearing too much eyeliner. Then, a few years back, we signed up for a three-month course through Treadwell’s Bookshop and began reading for friends and people at parties,” says Lensvelt, 31. “What started out as a way of getting free glasses of wine became something different and more interesting – at Port Elliot we interviewed authors on stage by reading their cards, and it worked really well.”
For Lensvelt, the increased popularity of the tarot is part of a wider trend towards mindfulness. “There’s a real sense of community in using it, particularly among younger women,” she says. “People think it’s about predicting the future, but it isn’t. It’s about the present, and it can be very empowering. It’s no surprise that a lot of the online communities are driven by queer people or people from minorities, segments of society where people feel as though they’re not seen or heard, because tarot allows you to consider a problem, give a voice to it, work it through and see where the blocks might be. It can give voice to problems or fears.”
Novelist Caroline O’Donoghue, whose musical side-project Greyhounds, Greyhounds, Greyhounds includes a song about tarot as a vehicle of revenge, agrees. “Throughout the ages, the idea of magic has given hope to people who have none, or the sense of power to those who feel that they have no power, and the tarot definitely taps into that,” she says. “Women and minorities, people with a lower locus of control, are far more likely to visit a psychic or a tarot-card reader because they’re more open to the idea of things they can’t control.”
Nor is it simply new twists on an old art that are touching a nerve. Sales of the most famous tarot pack, the Rider-Waite, created in 1910, “have suddenly shot up, tripling those of five years ago”, says Judith Kendra, publishing director at Rider Books. She attributes the increased interest to “political and social uncertainty [leading] people to turn towards the spiritual and mystical in a hunt for answers”.
“There’s definitely a sense that people feel lonelier or have a lack of certainty in their lives, a massive void that has left them looking for other ideas,” says Daisy Waugh, who in addition to writing the Dolly Greene Tarot Detective series under the pseudonym EV Harte works as a tarot-card reader, offering consultations from her home or via Skype.
“People are clearly looking for other ideas, and I think tarot allows us to consider where we fit in the universe. It works as somewhere you can go in with a problem and come out feeling clearer and better about the world.”
Keenan, whose Autonomic Tarot was born out of a poetry-inspired desire to experiment with the form, agrees that tarot-reading is about offering a space for “an intimate conversation to take place”.
“I’ve had people sobbing when I’ve read their cards, people telling incredible stories … it allows an intimate space to open up, the sort of intense connection that you really don’t get on social media,” he says. “Even the big, harsh cards like Death can be comforting and almost beautiful. They give you agency and say yes, something difficult might be happening but here’s how to use it as an engine of change.”
And even the more sceptical can find themselves, if not converted, at least open to new ideas. “I didn’t know anything about tarot before writing The Death of Mrs Westaway,” says Ware. “I thought it was all about telling the future and predictions and making money off people’s fears. I went in very sceptical and thinking I would find it all hooey but instead I came out with a huge amount of respect for tarot readers and tarot as a practice. A good tarot reader doesn’t tell you what’s going to happen, they simply allow you to think your question through in a different way.”
I was skeptical but somehow I ended up at a tarot card reading.
She gave me some advice and predictions that I thought were bogus at first.
But she turned out to be pretty accurate so far.
No matter what happens, it taught me to get as many outside perspectives on love as possible.
The closest I’ve ever really come to believing in psychics was watching “That’s So Raven.”
The supernatural was just never really my thing. I grew up going to church, where those kinds of activities were discouraged, and I’ve always sort of operated on the idea that, as much as I am a control freak, it’s probably better to just let destiny play itself out.
That said, tarot cards actually do have a pretty rich history spanning over centuries, even if they weren’t my thing for the first 23 years of my life. Their origin isn’t specifically documented though they came to popularity in the 15th century, according to HowStuffWorks. Around 300 years later, they took a little bit of a more divine turn.
At worst, I’m a skeptic. At best, I’m very polite.
Politeness was what brought me to an event at a department store’s grand opening. A friend had invited me and I felt like I just had to oblige. As I did the whole obligatory networking small talk, I noticed each of the little attractions. There was a facial station, a place to get false eyelashes applied, another booth for flash tattoos, and in the very center of it all, a tarot card reader.
Somehow, I got shuffled into line for the tarot card reader. I could have either turned and hopped out of line and gone on my merry way while appearing extremely rude or I could have asked a question that had been on my mind while also doing the polite thing … especially considering that the tarot card reader and I had officially made eye contact at this point.
Oh God, I thought. Did she just read my mind?
Many believe tarot cards can help when you have a big decision to make.
Well, I did have some questions. According to Vogue, I’m not alone. Generally, people tend to find solace in psychics when they’re at a crossroads in their journey. “I wanted answers on why things had happened and whether or not we were going to get back together,” one source told the magazine.
I was also at a crossroads. I’d been through a breakup in the past year and felt as though my dating life had come to a standstill. I was feeling unfulfilled at work and at 24 was definitely reaching my own crossroads. Call me Britney Spears.
I sighed heavily and sat down as the reader, an older woman with blonde hair, told me that she liked my shirt. I looked down at my Selena t-shirt and said “thank you” while trying to clear my mind and not give away any signals. I’ll admit that I make a pretty lousy skeptic because all it took was just one compliment for me to trust her and let my guard down. Sorry, mom!
She told me to shuffle the deck before handing me the heavy stack. She told me to focus on a question as I shuffled and to clear my mind, which is no easy task for someone with anxiety like mine, but if I was going to head to the dark side, I’d decided to do it right.
With all my might, I shuffled like a poker champ and cleared my mind.
“When will I meet someone new?” I asked.
I’d like to say that it just popped in my mind without any sort of consideration, but truthfully, I’m that perpetually single person who’s also always screaming about being a Carrie, swiping right on Tinder, and planning my wedding in a top-secret Pinterest board. Cat’s out of the bag on this one.
I handed her the cards, asked her my question, and watched her work her magic.
As soon as she pulled the first card from the pile, she began to tell me a few a different things. She asked about my breakup, how long it’s been, how I’d been feeling.
“You need a year,” she said. “Your ex, was he a businessman? Smooth talker? Made big promises but couldn’t deliver.”
The tarot card reader totally got my relationship history.
Next, she told me that I’d been searching for someone and in a cycle of going to the same places with the same people. This was also very much the truth.
“Stop going to the same bars and using the same apps,” she said. “Has it worked so far?”
I shook my head. It hadn’t.
“I hope the next card isn’t what I think it is,” she said.
I gulped and prayed she wouldn’t be predicting my death.
“Yep,” she said as she pulled out the card. “You’re going to be duped. He’s going to be in the same boat you are, a smart, attractive man with an eye for business of his own. Sound familiar? Different guy, same story. Don’t fall for it. He’s not over his breakup.”
With the next card, she gave me a little good news.
“Professionally, you’re going to be taking some big steps later in the year,” she said. “Please focus on that. 2018 will be your year and I think you’re going to go places professionally. I have faith that you’ll be satisfied in that regard, so keep your eye on the prize.”
Finally, it seemed as though we’d come to the end. She grabbed my hand, probably sensing that I was a little been shaken by being so seen.
“You are focusing on finding a relationship when you’re still a little too vulnerable,” she said. “You’re going to meet someone in March, a full year after your breakup, but before that, don’t go on dates expecting to meet someone if you’re not at 100%. If you don’t check in with yourself, possibly focusing more on your career and your friendships, then you’re going to be just going on meaningless dates to fulfill some sort of void and just end up meeting guys who aren’t looking for anything consistent.”
“Keep me updated,” she said.
I got it, but soon enough, my inner skeptic left me shaking my head. Why would I need to update her? Everything felt so general, she was probably just guessing. Maybe I’d given away too many signals.
But it turns out, her prediction may have come true
A few weeks later, at a favorite bar of mine, I met a boy. He worked in business and he was totally into the idea of a relationship, even just from our first conversation. I fell hard and after a couple weeks of talking, we laughed at the psychic’s predictions.
But eventually, he’d decided that it was just too much too soon, especially after a breakup that had left him feeling introspective.
Sound familiar? The skeptic in me knew that it all felt very coincidental, but a small part of me knew that her advice was useful and that maybe I should follow it.
Tarot cards or not, getting different perspectives on your love life is important.
Here’s the thing. Whether or not you’re a believer, it’s always nice to take a step back and explore your relationships and where you’re at when it comes to dating. A psychic is certainly no therapist, but an outsider’s perspective can still spur a little bit of thinking outside the box and checking in with oneself when it’s necessary.
That sit-down taught me that sometimes it just takes a little bit of prodding from someone unfamiliar to take the necessary steps for self-evaluation. If I hadn’t consulted her, I probably wouldn’t have noticed some of my own patterns or been a little bit more self-critical in regards to my approach.
Would I go to another tarot card reader? For fun, absolutely. I’d still ask important questions and take the most useful pieces of their answer to inform my behaviors.
Her predictions have turned out to be completely true so far, which is so Raven. It’s fun to believe in the accuracy and mysticism of it all, though I still remain a bit skeptical.
Will I meet someone come March? Maybe. I’ll keep you updated.
If you ask any reader for their essential decks, you are going to find yourself quickly experiencing what we call the diversity of divination!
Every reader will tell you that if you’re asking them, you really must have a Thoth deck – or a Waite-Smith deck – or a Fairytale Deck suitable for younger people – or a Marseille deck … and before long, you’ll wonder why you asked!
So we gathered our Tarot Association Facebookers together and asked them – all 13,000 of them – to tell us their essential decks and then we collated the results together. The results are as divserse as you might expect, even though we clipped the list at the most commonly mentioned top fifty. We could easily have made it the top one hundred, or maybe two hundred and fifty.
We’ve grouped decks together into historical decks, Lenormand, Oracle decks, etc., and realise that each of the categories could also have a Top Fifty. This list is intended to represent a fair collection of diverse decks, giving you a good idea of what other readers may have on their tables.
1. Waite-Smith Tarot by A. E. Waite & Pamela Colman-Smith (US Games) – produced in different editions, such as Commemorative, Radiant and Original. Also small and large sizes.
2. The Thoth Tarot by Aleister Crowley & Frieda Harris (US Games & Others) – produced in different editions and sizes.
3. The Mythic Tarot by by Juliet Sharman-Burke, Liz Greene and Giovanni Caselli (St. Martin’s Press, 2011) – originally produced by a different artist, the older version is now scarce.
48. The Burning Serpent Oracle by Rachel Pollack & Robert M. Place (Self-published, 2014) – a modern interpretation of antique oracular systems.
49. Tarot by Dennis Fairchild (Running Press, 2002) – a mini-deck with simple but universally accessible symbolism. Good for travel.
50. Revelations Tarot by Zach Wong (Llewellyn, 2012) for its take on reversals, or Tarot of the New Vision by Pietro Alligo, Raul Cestaro & Gianluca Cestaro (Lo Scarabeo, 2003) for its reversal of perspective on the Waite-Smith design.

Meat, tattoos and tarot: New Hendersonville restaurant puts it all under one roof Mackensy Lunsford Asheville Citizen Times Published 10:21 AM EDT Apr 11, 2019 When the coffee shop next to her restaurant Never Blue closed, Hendersonville chef Jesse Roque had a good reason for snapping it up: “I decided to put all my weirdness in one building,” she said. Hendersonville, get ready to meet Madame Roqué’s Meat Emporium & Pickled Curiosités, a restaurant featuring a few of the chef’s favorite things: good food, tarot and tattoos. “If I had not been a chef, I would have been a tattoo artist or read cards for a living,” said Roque, who was once the only licensed fortune teller in Polk County. “I’m a little witchy and a little strange, and I like food and I’m tatted up.” Cursory research reveals tattoo parlors with coffee bars and even full liquor bars. There are some tattoo artists who own restaurants adjacent to their studios. To Roque’s knowledge, this will be the country’s first restaurant containing two working tattoo studios — not to mention a small tarot card reading room. Not only will this be an entirely new concept to Hendersonville, a picturesque town of not quite 14,000, Roque, and her husband Edson Roque, are bringing Main Street its first tattoo studio. To that end, the chef acknowledges the concept might not be for everyone. “I’m just trying to make good food, and I like what I like and want what I want. This concept is unique and fun and, besides, I like when people raise their eyebrows at me.” To staff those studios, Roque will hire a house artist and also host traveling talent and tattoo-world luminaries. And, before you ask, the health department has given the whole concept a great big thumbs up. Chef Jesse Roque’s likeness will be rendered in paint on her future restaurant’s wall. Tarot cards will also decorate the space. Courtesy of Jesse Roque The studios will be physically sealed away from the main dining room, but expansive windows, fronted by high-top dining tables, will let eaters view the art of permanent ink as it happens. Blinds can be drawn, should the art application take place in a, say, a sensitive area. Beyond the tattoos But about the food: This will not be a buttoned-up, white tablecloth type of establishment, as you might have gleaned. Rather, this will be the type of restaurant that puts flavor before formality, and serves everything on recyclable plates just to drive the point home. “I’ve been throwing around this concept for a very long time, and this space lends itself perfectly to what I want to do,” Roque said. You’ll find a handful of different proteins daily, which may be smoked, roasted, grilled, cooked whole or “off cuts.” You might find curried lamb, whole-roasted chickens, turkey thighs, pork cheeks, or smoked and pulled pork. There will be vegetarian proteins, too. You can pick house-made tortillas on the side, or choose thematically appropriate breads, like naan for curried lamb. The dining room and studio space are coming together. Courtesy of Jesse Roque Pick your protein, then move down the line and select from several southern picnic-reminiscent sides with a point of interest, like macaroni and cheese punched up with Hatch chilies. Continue to a bar of the titular pickled curiosities. “That’s my thing,” Roque said. “I have pickling classes at the restaurant, and people say, ‘I never would have thought to pickle that.'” Roque has been known to pickle dates, apples, romanesco, “Even whole slabs of pork — you can really pickle anything.” ‘Some shock value’ Beyond the meat and bread and pickles, you’ll find a sauce bar stocked with traditional Latin salsas, barbecue sauce in flavors like guava-chipotle, perhaps a cilantro or coconut chutney — up to 18 different flavors with which to dress your meat, Roque explained. “I like options.” More: Artist breathes new life into old building More: Dining review: Underground Baking Company More: Dining review: Postero To drink, there will be bottled sodas and a full bar with six draft beers on rotations. There will also be a few frozen drinks and a heavy focus on quality tequila and craft margaritas. “You’ll be able to get your fancy-shmancy high-end margarita in your recyclable plastic cup, and everything’s coming on a half metal sheet pan,” Roque explained. The concept begs many fascinating questions, but anyone who’s ever been stuck in a slow-moving burrito line might wonder: will people freeze like deer in headlights trying to determine what sort of sauce to drizzle on goat? Maybe. Roque imagines they’ll get over that pretty fast. The variety of sauces isn’t likely to be the most intimidating thing about the place, after all. “There’s just going to be a different aura about it. I want it to be good food, the food I’d want to eat and I want people to have fun. But it’s a novelty, and there is shock value.” ‘Sit down. You’re getting a tattoo’ Certainly watching people getting tattooed while you eat is a unique experience. And, of course, you can book your own session, too. Want the house tattoo — a crystal ball with the venue’s initials? It’s just $25. Should you want to avoid the scene altogether, Madame Roqué’s boasts what Roque called the biggest patio on Main Street. But the spectacle is part of the point, and it’s easy to imagine Food Network crews descending on this picturesque mountain down to document the whole thing. And if Guy Fieri shows up? Roque already has a plan. “I’m going to be like, ‘Sit down. You’re getting a tattoo.'” Look for Madame Roqué’s Meat Emporium & Pickled Curiosités to open as early as mid-May at 117 South Main St. for lunch and dinner, Wednesday-Saturday.
