Chakra Monday: Your Throat Chakra

The throat is the center of communication, both verbal and nonverbal. The first of the upper three chakras, which deal more in the spiritual realm rather than the physical. Unlike the lower four, the boundaries here are harder to define. This chakra allows us to find our voice, governs our ability to express ourselves creatively and speak with integrity and truth.

Here we ask ourselves questions like; Is there something I need to say? Are there words stuck in my throat? Does this life reflect my best self? The practice here is about giving ourselves room to understand and explore our needs and desires. Perhaps we are stuck in a story that tells us we are inadequate or unworthy of such happiness and beauty – but that is a trick of the mind. Start to move away from this and create a new one by sitting quietly and listening for truth beneath the doubt.

Location: Throat, ears, mouth, neck, shoulders.

Color: Blue.

Mantra: I clear a path for truth.

Element: Sound, vibration.

When in balance: We are vibrating at a high frequency and understand that our words are powerful. We have created a meaningful life around our highest intentions and are able to express ourselves without hesitation and with kindness. We take time and space to listen to others and it’s important to us that they feel heard. Our words are rooted in truth and flow naturally, making most interactions pleasant.

When out of balance: We have trouble finding our voice and therefore find it difficult to communicate openly and effectively. Often we feel anxiety, guilt, shame, or fear around speaking our truth. When out of balance we tend to talk too much, project fears onto others and have trouble listening. We are not confident in our ability to create and manifest our dreams in the physical world.

I hope these practices clear the path for you to live out your dreams;

Sing!

Yes! Singing is one of the best ways to purify and clear the throat chakra. So sing in the shower or kick it old school and grab a hairbrush, stand in front of your mirror and belt it out! You may be surprised how healing this simple and fun practice can be.

Say what you need to say.

Be honest with yourself. Is there something you need to say to someone in your life? Or yourself? Something you are holding onto that has been bugging you? It may seem difficult but holding fear or resentment inside can be damaging to our spirit. Get it out! There are ways to approach a difficult conversation that make it less uncomfortable. Try using “I” statements instead of “you” or write out what you wish to say beforehand so you have a bit of a blueprint. Be honest and respectful – the relationship just may be better off in the long run.

Paint.

Create something, and don’t be afraid to color outside the lines. Let yourself splatter paint on a canvas or draw in a coloring book. (Yes, a coloring book — I am so serious.) Art is incredibly healing – remember, creating is another form of meditation. It allows us to surpass the mind and connect with the soul.

Forth Chakra Heart Chakra Anahata Chakra

The Forth Chakra, often referred to as the Heart Chakra or the Anahata Chakra is physically positioned at the heart region. Traditionally, this chakra is represented as a green flower with twelve petals which match the vrittis of lust, fraud, indecision, repentance, hope, anxiety, longing, impartiality, arrogance, incompetence, discrimination and defiance.

Anahata is associated with the ability to make decisions outside of the realm of karma. In Manipura and below, man is bound by the laws of karma, and the fate he has in store for him. In Anahata, one is making decisions, ‘following your heart’, based upon one’s higher self, and not from the unfulfilled emotions and desires of lower nature. The wish-fulfilling tree, kalpa taru, resides here, symbolizing the ability to manifest whatever you wish to happen in the world.

It is also associated with love and compassion, charity to others, and forms of psychic healing.

Anahata is the seat of the Jivatman, and Para Shakti.

It is associated with the following:

  • Deities: Vayu (Hindu lord of the wind), Isha and Kakini
  • Element: Air
  • Color: Green
  • Animal: Antelope
  • Body Parts: Heart, Skin, Lungs, Thymus, Blood, Lymph, Immune System
  • Planet: Venus

Heart Chakra PositionAbout

In kundalini yoga, anahata is awoken and balanced through practices including asanas, pranayamas, and the practice of ajapa japa (repetition of a sacred mantra). It is purified through the process of bhakti (devotion).

In the endocrine system, Anahata is associated with the thymus gland, located in the chest. This gland produces white blood cells, that combat disease, and bring equilibrium to the body.

Many Western occultists associate this central chakra with the central sephirah, Tiphereth, in the kabbalistic tree of life. Christian kabbalists in particular associate this sephirah with love, healing and Jesus Christ as God the Son.

Problem Symptoms

When energy is not flowing freely from this chakra there is a disruption of love, balance, harmony, peace, brotherhood, hope, growth and healing. When the chakra is blocked there is an inability to express any deep emotions including joy, fear, sadness and serenity. Diseases associated with this chakra imbalance include tuberculosis, arrhythmias, hypertension, coronary heart disease, asthma, high cholesterol, breast (cancer and fibromas), shoulder and esophagus problems, selfishness, and envy. Excessive yang leads to insensitivity. Excessive yin leads to hypersensitivity or the feeling of emptiness. This is the master control center for regulating the emotions.

Balance

This chakra is fed by finding your passion and following your heart. Have faith, find ways to express yourself and practice appreciation, balancing giving and receiving ,and forgiveness of yourself.

Sadly, we have ALL experienced the pain of being hurt, trashed, and beaten-up. One of my favorite sayings is by Gandhi: “The person who has experienced great pain and sorrow, is able to have more compassion for those who are suffering”. A closed heart chakra is from too much self-absorption, self-focus, and self-pity. Get beyond yourself! Get involved with others. Volunteer at your church, or within a social organization that needs help. At this chakra level you need to become aware of the “vibrations, magnetism, or resonance” that you feel when you are around others. Spirit will begin to provide you with “synchronicities” that will attract or direct you to people or events that are beneficial for your evolution as a soul.

Crystals and Gems

Crystals and/or gem elixirs which may help balance out the forth chakra: Adamite, Agate, Adventurine (Green), Alexandrite, Apophyllite, Beryl (Pink), Bloodstone (Green), Calcite (Lime Green), Carnelian, Celestite, Charoite, Chrysocolla, Chrysoprase, Cobalt-Calcite, Coral (Pink), Danburite (all chakras), Diamonds (all chakras), Dioptase, Emerald, Garnet (Green), Gold, Kunzite (Pink Spodumene), Lepidolite, Malachite, Moldavite, Moonstone, Opal, Peridot (Olivine), Pyrite, Quartz-Clear (all chakras), Quartz (Rose), Quartz (Rutilated), Topaz (Blue), Tourmaline (Watermelon, Green and Rubilite), Rhodonite, Ruby, Variscite, Zircon (all chakras).

Planet

This chakra is ruled by Venus; it corresponds to the “heart”. Your ability to love (both loving to others, and being able to receive expressions of love from others) acts as a “FULCRUM” between the lower 3 chakras of self-awareness, and the upper 3 chakras of your awareness of yourself in response to others. This chakra of “balance” is the first place where we are able to recognize that there is more to life than meets the eye, and we are able to perceive higher, spiritual realms. In yogic texts, this chakra is noted as the “sound of one hand clapping”. Think about it, when you express acts of love, you do so without the thought of reward. The “reward” is that your action made yourself and others feel good.

People who have suffered emotional hurts and wounding tend to block their Forth Chakras. They are afraid to make themselves “vulnerable”. This is a deliberate act of creating an “emotional wall” as a method of self-protection.

Second Chakra Pelvic Chakra Svadhisthana Chakra

Second Chakra Pelvic Chakra Svadhisthana ChakraThe Second Chakra, often referred to as the Pelvic Chakra or the Svadhisthana Chakra is located at the tailbone, about two finger widths above the root chakra.

It is associated with the following:

  • Deities: Varuna, Vishnu, Rakini
  • Element: Water
  • Animal: Crocodile
  • Color: Orange
  • Body Parts: Ovaries, adrenal glands, spleen, uterus, urinary system, prostate gland, uterus, cervix and lower bowel.
  • Planet: Pluto

Pelvic Chakra PositionAbout

Swadhisthana is positioned at the tailbone, two finger-widths above Muladhara. It has six petals which match the vrittis of affection, pitilessness, feeling of all-destructiveness, delusion, disdain and suspicion. Its corresponding point in the front of the body (i.e. its kshetram) is at the pubic bone.

Swadhisthana is associated with the unconscious, and with emotion. It is closely related to Muladhara in that Swadhisthana is where the different samskaras ( potential karmas ), lie dormant, and Muladhara is where these samskaras find expression. Swadhisthana contains unconscious desires, especially sexual desire, and it is said that to raise the kundalini shakti ( energy of consciousness ) above Swadhisthana is extremely difficult for this reason. Many saints have had to face the temptations associated with this chakra.

Swadhisthana is said to contain Kriya Shakti.

Practices in kundalini yoga for controlling and balancing the energy in Swadhisthana chakra include vajroli mudra ( contraction of the genitals ), ashvini mudra ( contraction of the anus ) and various asanas and pranayamas.

Due to its relation with sexuality, Swadhisthana is often associated with the testes or ovaries in men and women, as a part of the endocrine system. These produce the hormones testosterone or estrogen, which are important factors in sexual behaviour. These are also the locations the spermatoza or eggs are stored with their latent genetic information, like the latent samskaras that lie dormant within Swadhisthana.

Western occultists make the kabbalistic association of Swadhisthana with the Sephirah Yesod. Yesod is also associated with the sexual organs. Its function in the tree of life is to gather the different energies that have been created in the descent down the tree and to distribute them to Malkuth, the material world, where the energy can find physical expression.

Problem Symptoms

When energy is not flowing freely from this chakra you are lacking in creative drive and negotiation skills. This chakra is primarily associated with creativity and sexuality. This is a power vs. vulnerability chakra. It is about optimism, self-confidence, enthusiasm and courage. It involves money and power, who rules your relationship, boundaries and submissiveness. Frozen creativity causes fibroids. Lack of boundaries causes cervical dysplasia. If your second chakra is strong you have no problem saying no. When this chakra is weak you are susceptible to lower back pain and prostate problems, pernicious anemia and skin trouble. Men in their 40’s and 50’s sometimes struggle with their identity, creativity and potency (testapause). If there is too much yin there may be sexual problems. The abdominal area may be flabby, saggy or generally weak and may also be associated with kidney or bladder weaknesses. Too much yang will present as sexuality dominating the person’s life, sexual frustration and excessive fantasizing. There may be excessive tightness in the abdominal area leading to low back problems.

Balance

This chakra is fed by developing support systems and boundaries. Taking responsibility for what is happening in your life and “owning” up to your downfalls. Feeding your creative side and taking care of your body.

Honour your self by finding a hobby or activity that provides you with pleasure. Paint, draw, sing, act, dance, exercise your body, garden, and construct bird houses, something that expresses who you are to others. If you are not sure what you want to do, then think back to when you were about 10-12 years old. What did you dream about doing with your life’s energy that would make you happy and fulfilled?

Crystals and Gems

Crystals and/or gem elixirs which may help balance the second chakra: Amber, Bloodstone, Carnelian, Citrine, Coral (Orange), Danburite (all chakras), Diamond (all chakras), Garnet (Orange and Red), Moonstone, Gold, Opal, Pearl, Peridot, Quartz, Clear (all chakras), Quartz (Smoky and Rutilated), Ruby, Selenite, Tiger eye, Wulfenite, Zircon (all chakras).

Planet

Pluto represents your ability to “change and transform”, and when doing so, you are being “creative”. Without “desire” – we can not “create”! At this point your everyday survival needs are being met, and you are now able to focus upon the earthier, sensuous desires that life has to offer. Years ago I remember reading a yoga book that described the Second Chakra as “Her Special Place”. Here, you crave and desire material and sensual pleasure. When people get too focused on these sensual stimuli, their perception of reality is limited by the so-called “5 senses”. People at this level believe that things are real only if they can sense them. Remaining at this level invites “addiction”, whether it is to drugs, sex, or anything that you find to be pleasurable.

At the most basic level, people will express this creative energy through reproduction. The artists of our cultures are the people who have found this inner creative-self and are outwardly expressing it through their mediums.

When they are nice and hot…

Place the left palm on the front of your throat…

Place the right palm on the back of your throat…

Now close your eyes…

Visualise a radiant blue pulsating light emerge from the inside of your throat…

Now open your mouth and vibrate loudly the seed sound: HAM (HhhhAaaaMmmmm)…

Each time you do this visualise the blue light getting brighter and bigger…

Do this until the light expands outward from your throat…

Now say the following affirmations out loud, repeat if needed…

“I am Truth!”

“My word is my truth.”

“I say what I mean. My words and my thoughts are in unison.”

“I speak my truth with compassion.”

“I am the listener.”

“I am heard.”

“My voice is important.”

“I speak from my higher self.”

“My Spirit guides my tongue.”

“My creativity is blossoming.”

“I am authentic in every way, shape and form.”

“I express my soul purpose in everything I do, say and am.”

When you are ready open your eyes and journal your experience.

This may be repeated as many times as need be.

The Vishuddha in Sanskrit is thought to directly translate to “especially pure”. This Chakra is known as the Soul Gate. It is the Chakra of expression, not just any old half-hearted expression but authentic soul-cantered expression. The throat chakra is thought to be only about speech or vocalising who and what we are. The result of this thought pattern is that we get a lot of talking, no action and no listeners. Vishuddha is about a balance of authentic expression in everything you do. We have covered the Base Chakra, Sacral Chakra, Solar Plexus and Heart Chakra, and now here is the throat we see our soul filtering through for the first time in our physical experiences.

Vishuddha is about bringing down the soul message and enabling it to spread into the world, whilst at the same time allowing the world to provide the sensations necessary to create a beautiful dance of balance between receiving and giving. Vishuddha asks only one thing: Absolute authenticity at all times. This must be balanced by the Heart’s message of compassionate action. Remember that you are a spirit having a human experience and Vishuddha is where your souls intention comes through. Our lives are bombarded with so much destruction and not enough creation that it is difficult to live authentically for fear… yes… this is the main reason for a blocked Vishuddha. Our fear distracts the process of authentic expression.

Responsibility was outlined in the Solar Plexus Chakra, it is now even more evident to hold that responsibility within and realise that each one of us has a deep seated responsibility to authentically express our souls purpose and mission upon this planet. However, that being said, it is even more important to balance the observer, the listener and our own unique signature expression. It is imperative to be who you are, but in the same light allow the world to be what and who it is. Judgement needs to come from a compassionate standing. Interestingly enough, everyone always states that you should be non-judgemental, this is an impossibility unless you remove all perception. Choosing or making a decision involves a level of judgement. So, judgement in the core level with a compassionate intention is a given, it is even necessary to plot your course upon this planet but as long as it occurs with a heart-centred approach.

Now that we have covered the responsibility and the judgement let us look at our authentic expression – It is of paramount importance that regardless of the medium that you choose i.e. writing, painting, singing, speaking, that you express your soul truth. To assist in finding your medium, begin some sort of journal. Allow the words to flow, the images to be jotted and the ideas to leave the confines of your mind. Vishuddha is all about the inner truth. If you have been searching for your higher purpose and keep asking the question: “Why am I even here, what am I meant to be doing?” Then look at your throat chakra. Through a compassionate authentic expression, you will feel what you enjoy doing. How you choose to express who and what you are is the core seat of why you are here.

The Throat Chakra is your loud speaker. This is where the message from your soul leaves the ethereal and enters the physical world of matter to move those that it should. Your throat chakra is the voice of your soul. This is where you manifest your purpose from, this is where you give the world the message of your spirit. The process of manifestation comes from Vishuddha: Think it… Believe it… Speak it and so it is done. It is that simple. You create everything around you, and it is through your Vishuddha that you express this truth, it is through your Vishuddha that you give the world exactly what you were meant to. So, let go of the fear, the insecurities, the worry, the guilt, let go of the negativities and the dense vibrations… let go, live, and let live.

Vishuddhi Chakra – The Throat Chakra

Vishuddhi Chakra or the throat chakra is the purification centre. In Sanskrit, Suddhi means to purify, and Chakra means a wheel or vortex or energy. Vishuddhi chakra harmonises all the opposite thought patterns. It is the centre of nectar as well as poison. In the Indian mythology, Lord Shiva is said to have drank the poison to save the world, which can be seen as a blue tinge on his throat.  According to tantric texts, there are seven chakras or plexuses. Vishuddhi is the fifth plexus.

It is said that a sage who meditates on this chakra becomes eloquent and wise, enjoys uninterrupted peace of mind, knows about past, present and future, becomes free of diseases and sorrow and is a benefactor of all.

Location of Vishuddhi Chakra

Vishuddhi chakra is located behind the pit of the throat in the cervical plexus. The pit of the throat or the thyroid glands can be the trigger point for activating the chakra during meditation. The chakras more connected to the pranic body. Vishuddhi chakra is not part of the physical body but does influence the pharyngeal and laryngeal nerves.

Vishuddhi Chakra Summary - Kundalini Yoga

Traditional symbolism of Vishuddhi Chakra

In tantra, every chakra is depicted as a flower with many petals. There are many texts that describe the Vishuddhi Chakra. The most vivid among them is the Shad Chaka Nirupana, which has been translated to English by Sir John Woodroffe in his book, The Serpent Power.

Vishuddhi Chakra is described as a flower with 16 petals. The petals are purple in colour (smoky grey according to some). On the petals is found the seed letters am, aam, im, eem, um, ооm, rim, reem, lrim, lreem, em, aim, om, aum, am and ah written in golden colour.

In the centre or pericarp of the flower is a white circle like a full moon which represents the space element or Akasa Tattva. Within it, on an elephant white as snow, sits the seed letter of the chakra Ham, which is white in colour and holds in his four hands the noose, the goad and the other two hands display the gesture of granting boons and dispelling fear. In his lap, is the great God Sadasiva, three eyes, five faced, snow-white in colour, with ten arms and clothed in tiger skin.

Inside the pericarp of the flower there resides the Deity of the Vishuddhi Chakra called Sakini. She is described as purer than the ocean of nectar. She wears a yellow raiment and in her four hands she holds the bow, arrow, noose and the goad.

Seed Mantras associated with Vishuddhi Chakra

Seed Mantras or Bija Mantras are one letter syllabled mantras with hidden power. The mantra for Vishuddhi Chakra is Ham. Practitioners use the repetition of this seed mantra to activate the chakra.

Apart from this, the petals of the chakra also have seed letters associated with it. The petals of Vishuddhi chakra has these 16 letters – am, aam, im, eem, um, ооm, rim, reem, lrim, lreem, em, aim, om, aum, am and ah written on it. These are also used by practitioners while visualising the chakra.

Presiding Deity of Vishuddhi Chakra

Each chakra has a presiding divinity or deity, also known as Chakradhistadhatri. Goddess Sakini is the presiding deity of Vishuddhi. She is three-eyed, wears a yellow raiment and has four arms displaying bow, arrow, noose and goad. Goddess Sakini is white like light itself (Jyotih Svarupa) and purer than the nectar in the moon.

Sense Organ connected with Vishuddhi Chakra

In tantra, Vishuddhi Chakra is related to the ears and the sense of hearing.

How to Activate Vishuddhi Chakra?

There are many ways of activating a Chakra or plexus. One way is the use of Bija Mantras (One syllabled sacred sounds). The bija Mantra of Vishuddhi Chakra is Ham. Chanting of the seed syllable Ham can be used to activate Vishuddhi chakra.

Practice of Vipareet Karani Mudra, Jalandhara Banda (the Chin Lock), Ujjayi Pranayam and Kechari Mudra (the Tongue Lock) also activates the Vishuddhi chakra.

Apart from these, there are tantric methods of visualisation and meditation of the chakra to develop the full potential of the plexus.

Vishuddhi and Chakra Psychology

Each plexus is associated with the quality of the mind and the evolution of the person. Vishuddhi is the fifth chakra in the evolution of man and deals with purity of mind and intellect. At this chakra one gets higher discrimination. One can distinguish between mere thoughts coming from unconscious mind and the sublime messages coming from the supreme consciousness. There is no more confusion.

Here the practitioner is open to experiences of life. He is able to take in the good and bad experiences, integrate them and harmonise them for his further spiritual growth.

Vishuddhi is also the centre for verbal as well as higher communication.

This is the chakra where man comes to terms with all the opposites of life and can deal with the opposites without conflict and confusion.

Anahata Chakra – The Heart Chakra

Anahata Chakra or the heart centre is important in the evolution of mankind. It is the centre of unconditional love and also the beginning of free will, to control one’s karma. In Sanskrit, Anahat means unstruck and Chakra means a wheel or vortex or energy. Anahata chakra is the place from where the unstuck sound emanates. At the physical level it can indicate the sound of heartbeat which is constantly working till death. But, in yogic texts the reference is to the inner sounds that a yogi hears during the practice of Nada Yoga. These sounds are heard by itself, without any other aid; hence it is called the unstruck sound. Anahata Chakra deals with the respiratory and circulatory system.

In the text Shatchakra Nirupana, it is said that meditating on the heart makes a practitioner foremost among yogis and his senses are under his control, yet is adored by the opposite sex. He talks with inspiration and has the ability to enter another body at will.

The heart centre is also considered the seat of the soul or Jivatma.

Location of Anahata Chakra

Anahata chakra, also called the heart centre, is located inside the spine or Sushumna at the level of centre of the chest. This is the actual location. But externally, the chest, just above the sternum can also be considered as a trigger or activation point for Anahata. The chakras are more connected to the pranic body. Anahata chakra is not part of the physical body but is related to the respiratory and circulatory system.

Traditional symbolism of Anahata Chakra

In tantra, every chakra is depicted as a flower with many petals. There are many texts that symbolically describe the chakras. The most vivid among them is the Shad Chaka Nirupana, which has been translated to English by Sir John Woodroffe in his book, The Serpent Power.

Anahata Chakra is described as a flower with 12 petals. The petals have the colour of the Indian Bhanduka flower (reddish). Some say it is blue in colour. On the petals are found the Sanskrit letters – Kam, Kham, Gam, Gham, Ngam, Cham, Chham, Jam, Jham, Nyam, Tam and Tham written in the colour of vermilion.

Inside the pericarp is a smoky hexagonal mandala or region of Vayu, or air element. Inside it is the Bija of air element Yam, seated on a black antelope and having four hands. Within it is the merciful lord (some say Shankara), bright like a sun and displaying the gesture of giving boons and dispelling fear.

Inside the lotus is the presiding deity of Anahata called Kakini sitting on a red lotus. Kakini is yellow in colour and like a new lightening, three-eyed, auspicious and benefactress of all. She wears all kinds of ornaments, wears yellow raiment and is four armed with noose, skull and gestures of giving boon and dispelling fear. Her heart is softened with drinking of nectar.

Inside the pericarp of the lotus also is an inverted triangle indicating Shakti. In side it is a Linga (Shiva) by the name Vana Linga which is like shining gold.

Seed Mantras associated with Anahata Chakra

Seed Mantras or Bija Mantras are one letter syllabled mantras with hidden power. The mantra for Anahata Chakra is Yam. Practitioners use the repetition of this seed mantra to activate the chakra.

Apart from this, the petals of the chakra also have seed letters associated with it. The petals of Anahata chakra has these 12 letters – Kam, Kham, Gam, Gham, Ngam, Cham, Chham, Jam, Jham, Nyam, Tam and Tham written on it. These are also used by practitioners while visualising the chakra.

Each chakra has a presiding divinity or deity, also known as Chakradhistadhatri. Goddess Kakini is yellow in colour and like a new lightening, three-eyed, auspicious and benefactress of all. She wears all kinds of ornaments, wears yellow raiment and is four armed with noose, skull and gestures of giving boon and dispelling fear. Her heart is softened with drinking of nectar.

Sense Organ connected with Anahata Chakra

In tantra, Anahata Chakra is related to the skin and the sense of touch.

How to Activate Anahata Chakra?

There are many ways of activating a Chakra or plexus. One way is the use of Bija Mantras (One syllabled sacred sounds). The bija Mantra of Anahata Chakra is Yam. Chanting of the seed syllable Yam can be used to activate Anahata chakra.

Practice of Bhramari Pranayama can also activate Anahata. Practice of Ajapa-Japa or spontaneous effortless chanting of a mantra is also useful. Apart from this, concentration and meditation on the chakra location and other visualisation techniques can also be used.

Anahata and Vishnu Ghranti

Vishnu Ghranti is the second psychic knot and is located in the heart chakra. This knot is formed from the emotional blocks and entanglements that we have accumulated over time. These emotional knots are an impediment for spiritual growth. When the Anahata chakra is awakened, these emotions go through a change. There is harmony and balancing of these emotions which can be used for further spiritual growth.

Anahata and Chakra Psychology

Each plexus is associated with a certain quality of the mind and the evolution of the person. Anahata is the fourth chakra in the evolution of man and deals with unconditional love, healing and free will. At the lower chakras, man is completely under the sway of his fate or destiny. When the person evolves to the level of heart chakra, he breaks the shackles of karma to some extend and express free will.

When you are in Muladhara, Swadhistana or Manipuraka, you are still governed by instinctive behaviour. When you reach Anahata, for the first time, you are able to act consciously without being a slave of your past impressions.

Anahata is also called the wish fulfilling tree. At this stage, your thoughts begin to gain strength and can materialise your desires in the outside world.

At the lower chakras, man is acts from selfish motives only. Even at Manipuraka, person may be dynamic, but always acts for his selfish needs. But at Anahata, a great change happens. The practitioner is able to go beyond the selfish concerns and act selflessly. They are able to love the world and the society without thinking of any personal gain.

Eat These 9 Seemingly Unremarkable Foods To Open Your Throat Chakra

The throat chakra, also known as the “vishuddha” chakra, is the fifth of the seven energy centers of the body. Vishuddha means “especially pure” in Sanskrit, emphasizing its main relevance: purity. The throat chakra is also known as our communication center and is linked to the themes of self-expression, integrity and truth. When we are purified, we uncover and remove all that obscures our truth and let it come through.

This energy center is associated with the color blue and is located in the throat area. It is associated with the throat, mouth, jaw, neck, ears, nose, thyroid and parathyroid.

What Does An Open Throat Chakra Look Like?

When our throat chakra is open, we are speaking from our truth as well as living in alignment with it. What goes in our mouth is important, but so is what comes out of our mouth – and perhaps it is even more so. Also, the throat chakra is not just about speaking, but our ability to listen for optimal communication with others.

And When It’s Closed?

If you have issues with any of the body parts listed, stifle speaking your truth to others around you, are not expressing your true self, or if your life is in misalignment with your truth and what your intuition tells you, you may need to focus on balancing this chakra to help bring in some healing and purifying shifts.

The Chakra Centers and the Capacity of Activating Them-part 1

AUTHOR: Shriram Sharma Acharya

In ancient times researchers of Soul Sciences very intricately discovered conscious principles of the subtle world. In this very human body (microcosm) they found the mirror-image of the material world (macrocosm). Whatever one perceives in the gross world is present in the human body in a subtle form. Hence instead of carrying out research studies pertaining to the external world with the help of very expensive scientific technical apparatus, the ancient seers/sages looked upon the human body as a reflection of the gigantic cosmos and hence conducted research studies by diving deep into their souls within the body.

These ancient seers and Yogis while conducting research in the field of Soul Sciences concluded that amongst all spiritual practices (Sadhanas), activation of Kundalini Mahashakti or Divine Serpent Power is most important. After understanding the nature of the Divine Serpent Power along with its apt utility power, it was noted that Kundalini controls 2 main centers within the human body. These 2 centers are powerful as the 2 poles of the planet earth viz. the North Pole and the South Pole. Kundalini activation involves mastering of these 2 centers/poles in the human body. This spiritual practice involves many small/big experiments and then applying their results. There are certain very easy experiments which when executed can make a person radiant, brilliant and positively active. There are other difficult and high leveled experiments pertaining to Kundalini Activation. Such methods make the inner soul of a person so all-pervasive that he can contact all the Divine Powers of this gigantic cosmos. This cosmos overflows with extraordinary powers but laymen do not have the capacity to understand and utilize them for material and spiritual progress. But when a person via Kundalini Activation comes in contact with all these cosmic powers, he can make use of all of them as per his requirements. Apart from this such an exalted soul can influence the entire cosmos so as to benefit the world both materially and spiritually.

A medium activation of Divine Serpent Power produces a lightning-like electrical flow in the human body. I have personally known a Sidha (realized saint/sage) whose body was filled with material electricity continuously. No one could touch him. If anyone dared touch him, he would experience an electric shock that one gets by touching naked wires. This realized saint always kept his eyes in a drooping state. This was because if anyone made eye-contact with this realized saint, he would become unconscious. Once, this realized saint stared at a piece of glass and instantly the glass piece cracked into tiny pieces. This was the result of the glass contacting the bodily electricity of that realized saint. When this electrical flow touches the psyche, one overcomes all limitations of the mind. When Valmiki contacted the divine mind of Narad and Angulimal that of Lord Budha both ferocious dacoits surrendered unconditionally at Narad’s and Lord Budha’s feet respectively. As a result they gave up their vile activities and instead lived lives of sages. Yogic spiritual practices can create infinite power in the gross, subtle and causal bodies of the body, mind and soul respectively. It goes without saying that Kundalini Activation is the most important aspect of Yogic spiritual practices. Even if one performs preliminary practices, one’s worldly life becomes radiant and glorious. It is difficult to describe the miraculous heights one reaches when higher levels of Yogic practices are imbibed.

From a gross standpoint the human body is a living and thinking mass of flesh. Its activities revolve around nourishing the body and procreation. The mind is immersed in greed, attachment and ego based thoughts. A living being immersed in satisfying desires, sometimes tastes joy and at other times despair. Thus he lugs the burden of life virtually like a donkey only to enter the jaws of death. One sometimes gets sense pleasures and at other times loses all of them. One keeps building and breaking contacts with other creatures of the world. There is no beginning or an end to the vicious circle of hope and despair. A living being like wet mud revolves around the wheel of a potter. Over here he loses or transforms his very existence. Man is very much a part of the cycle of creation, propagation and destruction of the world. Like all material objects man too undergoes this cycle.

The chemical analysis of the physical human body is very lowly and valueless. The market value of these chemicals is even less than animals, birds etc. sold in markets. If we try and sell man’s blood, flesh, bones etc. in the market we will get a price less than that obtained by selling a living hen. Despite this man is considered the glorious peak of creation. This is only because of consciousness dwelling in his body. This conscious energy can be seen as zest, might and beauty in the human body. The subtle body oozes with wisdom oriented glory, intellectual radiance and an enterprising mind. The ultimate casual body overflows with divine glories like faith, hope, love, service, generosity, compassion etc. towards entire creation.

This conscious energy of all the 3 bodies, viz. physical, subtle, causal is said to be more potent than all the intense energy vibrations of heat, sound, electricity, ether etc. of material inter-stellar space put together. The ratio difference between material energy and spiritual energy is equivalent to the material potency measured by modern scientific apparatus and the soul power experienced by great Yogis within their bodies. We hear amazing talks regarding lasers, death rays, atomic energy etc. As against this if we deeply understand the creative potential of soul force, we will realize that it is impossible to measure it.

A very infinitesimal unit of the human body called the sperm has the capacity to produce a new human body. The atom is compared to the solar system. The microcosm (human body) is said to be the representative of the macrocosm (cosmos). This is not only a fact but is an abject reality. Under such circumstances man’s very existence can be compared to that spark of fire which in its seed form has the capacity to burn up a gigantic forest. A seed has the potential to grow into a gigantic tree if it comes across conducive situations. In its true form it can generate innumerable other seeds.

There exist bipartite applications of divine energy. When it is purified thoroughly man becomes a saint, demigod or God Himself. He thus accesses all the Divine Powers of such divine beings. If this very Divine Power is used for material progress, a person becomes very brilliant. He reaches the peaks of progress and carries out gigantic tasks which were previously impossible to execute. Thus every step of his is akin to victory. The bright pages of history radiate further due to the glory attained by such radiant, skilful and bright individuals. These eulogies pertaining to such divine men are not because of their attainments in the external world, but are based on the radiant conscious energy within their awakened psyche.

The science of advancing one’s conscious energy encompasses Yogic practices and austerities. Within the visible gross body lie 2 bodies called subtle and causal bodies and they cannot be seen by the human eye. The aim of Yogic or any other spiritual practice (Sadhana) is to make conscious, this otherwise unconscious or unaware subtle body. This will induce awareness/consciousness in the individual. One will overcome Maya (power of illusion) and become divine as a result of purification of the psyche. It is believed that when devotees, Yogis, men of austerities etc. attain Ridhi-Sidhis (Divine Powers), it is the result of blessings from demigods, ghosts, demons etc. But the reality is that whatever is labeled as amazing, extraordinary or extrasensory is nothing but manifestations from within our soul (Shri Aurobindo Ghosh writes in his poem “SAVITRI”: Logic in the infinite is magic in the finite). Purification of the mind/psyche is called God-realization or salvation. If we do understand this precept clearly, we will be called true knower of truth.

Soul based practices have many applications. Innumerous methods and paths have been laid down by many schools of thought. Within Indian Sciences of Spiritual Practices, 84 Yoga (union with God) are most important. Their branches and sub-branches could add up to a few thousand in number. Hence it is even more tedious to keep count of well-known spiritual practices of other areas of this world. In Yoga practices, the path of Chakra activation is such that all over the world it has been widely accepted. Despite there being difference of opinion regarding the mode and nature of Chakra activation, people unanimously accept its existence and positive influence. Time and again activation of Kundalini Shakti i.e. Divine Serpent Power has been discussed within the arena of spiritual practices. This is the ultimate stage of success attained due to Chakra activation. We are all aware of the electrical energy that flows in the nerves of the human body. Telephone wires can only work if they are connected with electricity. It is the miracle of this very electricity that results in sensations perceived by our sense organs (eyes, ears etc.) and all ideas and sentiments in our brain. Layers of storms that manifest electromagnetic waves arise in our body and thus our moods experience joy or despair. One’s life is directed in a particular way which depends on this sort of an influence. Great Yogis have always endeavored to understand this divine conscious flow so that we can make apt use of it to augment our material and spiritual progress.

Research studies on conscious energy reveal that the Sahasrar Chakra (subtle 1000 petal plexus) present in the center of the brain, is akin to the North Pole of planet earth and the South Pole is the genital region at the base of the spine which is where one finds the Mooladhar Chakra (subtle plexus). These are the 2 bodily centers that are the medium of give and take with Cosmic Consciousness (God) and an individual contacting the latter. The divine energy within them is the axis of life’s very existence. The center of intellect and faith is above and the center of joy and might is below. The genitals are not meant merely for experiencing joy during sexual intercourse and producing children, because at the root of our genital organs lie artistic skills, daring, zest etc. These are said to be the basis of material progress. When a person loses this energy, he is denounced as a eunuch. Over here intense effort is described and not the act of sexual intercourse. The Mooladhar Chakra is the center of material powers.

The Sahasrar center of the brain is the root source of wisdom, intellect and other spiritual qualities. Spiritual practices like Pratyahar (cutting off the contact between sense organs and their objects for e.g. nose stops egoistically smelling things), Dharana (one-pointed focus of the mind), Dhyan (meditation on a single thought wave), Samadhi (trance or Super Conscious State) are carried out in the brain region. A chain joins the Mooladhar which is a center of material powers and Sahasrar which is a source of spiritual powers. This chain is ordinarily called Merudand and in spiritual terms it is called Sushumna (subtle spine-according to Indian Yoga). What is the importance of the spinal cord? The answer is well-known amongst experts of Anatomy. Along with the electrical stream within the spinal cord, are conjoined high leveled divine glories. A realized saint or one who has experienced the cosmic soul (God) truly knows all this. In this center, flow intense electrical streams with great speed. It has 2 forms i.e. negative and positive. Ida nerve (subtle) is negative and Pingala nerve (subtle) is positive. When both these subtle nerves unite, we experience an energy flow which is called Sushumna (subtle spinal nerve). It can also be called Naadi. Naadi is either a nerve or a blood vessel like arteries and veins. Over here it means a subtle nerve and not a gross blood vessel. In this Sushumna there are 2 electrical streams. Suppose a great surgeon opens up the spinal cord to see the Ida, Pingala and Sushumna, please note that he will see nothing of this sort! This is because the Ida, Pingala and Sushumna described in Indian Yogic scriptures are very subtle in nature. Thus no modern, material apparatus can prove its existence. These subtle nerves can only be experienced by an individual who has purified his mind so as to make it very subtle and focused. Very briefly these are 2 types of energy centers. One is in the brain (spiritual) and the other near the genitals (material). The electrical streams flowing in the Ida, Pingala and Sushumna subtle nerves are like a bridge that joins these 2 energy centers. Symbolically Ida, Pingala and Sushumna are compared to Rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. It is called Triveni or 3-fold union.

When a river flows very speedily it tends to create eddies. When the atmospheric wind is hot and speedy, one experiences cyclones in the summer season. Just like eddies in a river and cyclones in wind, the conscious energy flowing in the Sushumna is said to be merely an intense stream of electricity. It is called an energy wheel. In Yogic scriptures it is said that there are 6 such energy wheels.

In Indian mythology called Puranas the symbol of effort and son of Shakti (divine energy) is said to be Kartikeya Skand. He is Parvati’s son, yet according to Shiva Purana it was Kritikas (Pleide Stars) who reared him. Agni (fire) retained Kartikeya in its womb. Shiva’s Retas (sperm) manifested as fire and Vaishwanar (bodily hunger fire) in the form of a female, imbibed this Retas in her womb and nourished it. Yatudhanas, symbols of innumerous obstacles, had rendered the life of demigods full of distress. These Yatudhanas were defeated by Kartikeya Skand. This son of Shakti had 6 faces.

This incarnation of Skand should be understood as the description of the influence of the 6 Chakras related to Kundalini super energy. Kundalini or Divine Serpent Power is nothing but the substratum fire present in the root of our genitals. When Shiva in the form of Sahasrar is activated, it manifests honey-like pollen and this is Shiva’s Retas. Kundalini as the substratum fire held this Retas. The 6 Kritikas (Pleide Stars) nourished this Retas. These 6 Kritikas are the 6 Chakras. Thus this union of Shva and Shakti (Kundalini) results in the manifestation of the great warrior Skand. Skand has 6 faces. Kartikeya whose 6 faces are nourished by the 6 Kritikas, should be looked upon symbolically as the influence of the 6 Chakras (subtle plexuses).

The 6 Chakras are situated one after another in a vertical manner on the Merudand and the first one is situated in the genitals at the base called the Mooladhar Chakra. The last one called Sahasrar is situated at the top, in the central region of the brain called Brahmarandhra. This can be called a special powerhouse or microwave station. Above Mooladhar lies the Svaddhishthan Chakra in the navel region. After that comes the Manipur Chakra between the navel and heart region. Anahat Chakra is found in the heart region. Vishudha Chakra is found in the throat region. The Ajna Chakra is found in the center of the eyebrow. Finally the Sahasrar is situated in the center of the brain region called Brahmarandhra. Thus if you include Sahasrar Chakra there are 7 Chakras (plexuses). These Chakras are described on the basis of the demigod, vehicle, color etc. of that region. This is so that when a spiritual seeker activates these Chakras, he can gauge which stage he has reached and how far has he progressed.

What are the 6 Chakras? Where are they situated? What is their state? What is their utility? One should at least understand the preliminary answers to the above questions. The application of its utility and teaching varies and a spiritual seeker is given that teaching which is conducive to his individual mental state. The Merudand ends at the root of genital organs. Between these two there is a hollow space which is called Yoni Kand in spiritual terms. According to modern anatomists, the Sushumna nerve is merely a network. But according to subtle body scientists there lies a special bodily part in this region which is called the Mooladhar Chakra. Below this is a back akin to that of a tortoise. Hence it is called Kurma. Above it is the Merudand and is called Sumeru. Surrounding it is a serpent like energy principle lying coiled with 3 ½ rounds. This is the Mooladhar Chakra. This can be explained as a ball or Kand situated in a pyre or cave. This is the first Chakra. This is the root area of Kundalini or Divine Serpent Power. Although the fire in a stove is extinguished when no more fuel is added to it, yet one can experience some amount of heat in its vicinity. Ordinarily this is the state of laymen. With effort when one adds the fuel of Prana (vital force), the fire manifests. Its flame travels upwards.
